Open shelving is one of our favorite design trends. By replacing upper cabinets with shelves it instantly lightens and brightens the entire feel of the kitchen, creating a more airy and open appearance.
The style of your kitchen will dictate which type of open shelves you'll want to use. If your kitchen is a bit more formal/glam then painted shelves might be a good option to give it a clean and polished feel. If your overall style is more rustic or modern farmhouse you might want to think about reclaimed wood shelving. There are endless options for the material of shelves, such as glass, metal, or even marble! Just stay true to the design of the space.
Another thing to think about is how many shelves will be suitable for your storage needs. If you have ample storage throughout the kitchen, a single shelf might just do the trick! But if you're like us, the more storage the better, so we typically suggest at least 2-3 shelves in each grouping. When it comes to open shelving it doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can still keep upper cabinets in part of the kitchen and shelving in the other.
Our favorite part of including open shelves in the design of a kitchen is the styling! This is a great opportunity to put your beautiful serving pieces on display! Add in a few cookbooks, a cake stand, and maybe even a small plant!
